Famco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Crown Repair: The Plainview Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible crown repair assemblies for most residential chimney models, with typical installed pricing in Plainview running $340-$620 depending on crown size and flue configuration. Most Famco crown repairs we book are completed in a single visit, and we carry the common sizes on our trucks. Homeowners usually discover the problem during the first fire of the season, when water that seeped through a cracked crown all summer suddenly steams off and stains the firebox, or when a chunk of concrete falls onto the damper during a routine cleaning.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco crowns are found on masonry chimneys with standard 8×8, 8×12, and 13×13 flue openings, most commonly on homes built between 1965 and 1995 across Nassau County. The critical identifier is the cast-in-place concrete crown stamped with a small “F” logo near the flue edge, or a metal tag on the chimney cap assembly reading “FCO” followed by a two-digit series number.

We see three main series in Plainview: the FCO-20 (single flue, up to 8×12), FCO-30 (double flue or oversized single), and the less common FCO-40 (triple flue, mostly in the larger Colonials north of Old Country Road). The FCO-30 is the one that trips people up - it uses a thicker 2.5-inch crown slab, and a standard FCO-20 replacement will crack within two seasons if forced into that opening.

OEM Famco crowns are cast concrete with a built-in drip edge. We also source aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that match the thermal expansion coefficient more closely, which matters in Plainview’s freeze-thaw cycle. For most homeowners, the aftermarket performs as well or better at roughly 15% lower parts cost. We are an independent service provider with no affiliation to Famco, so we recommend what actually fits your chimney, not what moves a particular SKU.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks running from the flue edge to the crown perimeter. These form when the concrete expands and contracts through Long Island’s freeze-thaw cycles, and they widen enough to funnel water directly onto the flue liner. In Plainview, we see this accelerate after winters with heavy ice damming.
  • Concrete spalling or flaking on the crown surface. This means water has already penetrated the concrete matrix and is pushing outward from within. The crown is now porous, and every rainfall is sending moisture toward your liner and smoke chamber.
  • Water staining on the firebox walls or damper assembly. By the time you see this inside, the crown has been compromised for at least one full season. The water path runs: crown crack → flue gap → smoke chamber → firebox, and it carries dissolved salts that corrode metal dampers.
  • Mortar erosion on the top two courses of brick below the crown. A failed crown drips water down the chimney exterior, washing out the mortar joints. We’ve repointed entire top sections in Plainview homes where the crown was ignored for three years.
  • The crown sounds hollow when tapped with a screwdriver handle. Solid concrete gives a dull thud; delaminated concrete rings. This means the crown has separated from its bedding layer and is sitting loose, often tilting toward one flue opening.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range
Famco-compatible crown (parts) $140-$280
Labor: removal, surface prep, installation $180-$300
Flue sealant and waterproofing top coat $40-$80
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included
Typical total in Plainview $340-$620

The range depends on crown size, whether we need to rebuild the top course of brick underneath, and whether the flue liner itself has taken water damage. We photograph everything before a tool touches the chimney, and we show you exactly what we found. Nothing is recommended without camera evidence you can see yourself. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the full installation - in writing, no arguing. A square deal: the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for crown replacement. You are working at roof height, often on a 6/12 pitch or steeper, with a concrete slab that weighs 40-80 pounds. The old crown must be broken free without damaging the flue liner, the bedding surface must be cleaned to bare masonry, and the new unit must be leveled to shed water toward all four edges. One misstep and you are replacing a flue liner too, at ten times the cost.

What you can safely check from the ground: binoculars will show obvious spalling, tilt, or missing chunks. If you see any of that, call us at (934) 348-4832 and we’ll get a technician out with the right Famco-compatible crown on the truck. Most jobs we book in Plainview are completed that same visit.
